SAFE POINT TRUST CHARITY

By Geoffrey Nangai
MEMBERS of Safe Point Trust a UK based charitable organization with the purpose of educating the next generation in safe health care has announced a donation plan of Auto-Disabled syringes to the Ministry of Health in efforts to minimize deaths caused by syringe re-usage.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, 50 percent of all injections given globally are unsafe and 20 million medical injections contaminated with blood from patients with HIV/AIDS in Africa alone.
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salam earlier this week, Anna Koska the Safe Point Charity Ambassador said the use of unsafe injections kill 1.3 million people each year.
“Every 24 seconds a person dies as a result of receiving an injection from an unclean syringe. These are horrifying statistics and yet people are unaware of the extent of the problem or even unwilling to acknowledge it even if its exists
“Necessary interventions need to be undertaken that should go in line with ensuring that syringes are only used once that will help in minimizing such death risks. Every one should be taught on the risks so that they can decide on whether to buy a new syringe or take on the risk” Koska said.
On his part celebrated Emmanuel Mgaya a.k.a Masanja of the popular ‘Ze Orijino Komedi’ show that shows on the National Broadcaster TBC who is the Safe Point Tanzanian Ambassador there was need for proper disposal of used syringes that should go in line with patients ensuring the use of new syringes every time they go for injections.
“People should ensure that syringes are used appropriately. No re-usage and then stick to the right disposal. This way we shall be able to minimize risks of catching diseases through syringes” Mgaya.
According to Safe Point, every person across the world has a right to ask for and receive a sterile and safe injection with statistics indicating that a syringe is used on average seven times in the dev eloping world.
