THE UNIVERSITY OF DAR ES SALAAM RE-BRANDS ITS PROFILE AS IT APPROACHES 50 YEARS OF AGE
1.0 Background about the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)
The University of Dar es salaam is the oldest and so far the largest public university in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on Observation Hill, and located 13 kilometers from the city centre.
The University of Dar es Salaam was established on July 1st 1961 as the University College Dar Es Salaam, an affiliate college of the University of London. It became a constituent College of the University of East Africa in 1963 and a National University in 1970.
The University of Dar es Salaam has grown in terms of student intake, academic units and academic programmes offering the awards of certificates, diplomas, and degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The programmes include evening study programmes designed to offer opportunities to mainly the employed people although any other interested person with the requisite entry qualifications can apply and be admitted.
The number of enrolled students at the University has been increasing steadily, from 14 in 1961 to 19,718 in the 2008/2009 academic year. Female students constitute 38% of all undergraduate students.

Besides the Colleges, Schools and academic institutes, UDSM has also administrative directorates, bureaus and centres which include Directorates of Undergraduates and postgraduates studies, Planning and Finance, Human Resources Development, Research, Public service, Gender and entrepreneurship Centre and Quality Assurance Bureau.
At the top of the UDSM administration is the Chancellor, the University Council, the Vice Chancellor and the two Deputy Vice Chancellors, one for Academic Affairs and the other for Administration.

6.0 University of Dar es Salaam attains 50 years of age
